Patriotic Paper Plate Flag Kid's Craft

Just about every week my grandchildren come over and have art lessons/crafting time with me. It's something we enjoy doing together and it helps build their confidence to be creative! It doesn't have to be perfect and it's fun to learn new ways to be creative. Since this is Memorial Day weekend, I thought a patriotic craft was in order and this is what I came up with today. The kids will make them tomorrow since they were not able to fit into their schedule earlier in the week.

Supplies are as follows below. Don't fret if you don't have exactly what I used. Be creative and use what you have on hand if possible. :)

  • Acrylic paint in red and blue or use makers or crayons.
  • Six inch paper plate or cut out a white circle from cardstock. Walmart is where I purchase mine for everyday use. It is sold in the reams of paper isle.
  • Petal pattern. It measures 1-1/2" x 4 inches long.
  • Cardstock in red, blue and white for the petals.
  • Glue dots, sticks or Elmers glue will work. We like to use glue dots as they hold well and are super sturdy.
  • #12 Paintbrush 3/4" flat paint brush
  • Jar of water to clean your brush.
  • White paper 1/2" stars (or sequins, painted macaroni, glitter glue shaped like stars or star stickers) They are so tiny and would be impossible to cut out so I left them out of the pattern page. I can make svgs of all shapes available if anyone is interested, but if you have a Cricut, you can cut these out in Designspace for free.
  • I used an ultra fine point black sharpie to add the squiggles and dots, but it's not necessary. I just like to go a little extra. ;)
  • Pattern Pdf File  Download this file and print onto your cardstock. Cut out your petal and star. Then trace onto the colored papers you have chosen.
Take your paper plate and divide it into four sections with a pencil. Draw it out lightly so it doesn't leave lines after or just erase a little off if they are too dark.

Fill in your upper left corner with blue acrylic paint. Let dry and do another coat to make your color darker if you prefer. Erase the line at the bottom and now make vertical lines for your red stripes as shown below.

Wash out your blue paint on your brush and load with red and fill in your lightly drawn pencil lines with red acrylic paint. Don't be upset if your lines aren't perfect...eyeball it! Just have fun. :) Let dry and add another layer of paint.

Once all is dry, use your Elmer's glue and lightly dot our your star placement pattern with stars made from cardstock or whatever item you've chosen to substitute. Now arrange your petals the way you want them and glue them onto the back of your paper plate. I use a 1/8" paper punch to make a hole at the top and add fishing line to hang.

Another option is to add stars at the top and use a regular paper punch and make six holes centered at the bottom of your plate. I cut three strips of streamer, on each color, in half and alternating in each hole red, white and blue.

My grands liked that option!

Happy Memorial Day and Happy Crafting!

Thank you to all who have served and are currently serving in our armed forces. So many have sacrificed and given their lives to preserve the freedoms we enjoy today.
